Mollusca
detail, Pretty in Pink
Mollusca is a series of photographs I shot examining at close range shells that I have collected on the beaches of the Outer Cape. I am struck by the extraordinary beauty of each layer, chip, fissure, and barnacle. The contrasts between rough and smooth, the internal versus the external. These are tensions I explore in the literal as well as metaphorical form. Presented in large format these shells take on a new meaning for me. As a metaphor for life, these shells reflect the wisdom and beauty that comes from age and experience, the parts of us that shine as well and those that are rough, the scars that come from loss and the collective spirits of those we hold close.
